چکیده

Motivation This study was conducted to determine how people frame decisions naturally. Research Approach Decision framing was analyzed in the computer mediated Mars Exploration Rover (MER) mission planning process. Outcomes of proposed actions were coded as positively or negatively framed, with rates of framing compared relative to action specificity and expertise. Findings It was found that positive framing was preferred in general, and that increased expertise led to more balanced consideration of positive and negative outcomes. Research Limitations/lmplications This study was exploratory and experimentation is necessary to formalize the observed patterns further. OriginalityNalue The findings suggest that providing decision-makers additional information about the costs of using technology may more rapidly lead to better mental representations in technology-supported decision making. Take away message Different kinds of expert behavior promote different patterns of decision framing relative to how technology is used for decision-making.

Causal Reasoning: Initial Report of a Naturalistic Study of Causal Inferences

Motivation – This paper describes the initial results of a naturalistic inquiry into the way people derive causal inferences. Research approach – We examined media accounts of economic, political, military, and sports incidents to determine the types of causal explanations that are commonly invoked. Findings – We found two interacting processes at work: the identification of potential causes an...

Controlling for Framing Effects in Multi-stakeholder Tradespace Exploration

Framing effects have been shown to have dramatic impact on human decision making in many domains, in certain circumstances even driving self-detrimental behavior. Multi-stakeholder tradespace exploration (MSTSE), an emerging technique for advanced multiparty decision making for engineering systems, has displayed many benefits with regards to insight-generation and identification of mutually ben...

A New Approach to Information Science: Framing a Naturalistic Perspective

In recent decades, an increasing variety of research fields are converging into information science conceptualizations. They are accompanied by astounding new uses of knowledge and even more astounding social transformations that revolve around information technologies. Whether a robust information science will finally emerge may not only depend on successful discussions about the philosophy of...

Frames and Games

Decision-makers are sometimes influenced by the way in which choice situations are presented to them or “framed.” This can be seen as an important challenge to the social sciences, since strong and pervasive framing effects would make it difficult to study human behavior in a synthetic or theoretic manner. We present results from experiments with dilemma games designed to shed light on the effe...

Mechanisms of saccadic decision making while encoding naturalistic scenes.

Saccadic eye movements are the primary vehicle by which human gaze is brought in alignment with vital visual information present in naturalistic scenes. Although numerous studies using the double-step paradigm have demonstrated that saccade preparation is subject to modification under certain conditions, this has yet to be studied directly within a naturalistic scene-viewing context. To reveal ...
